If you suspect your vehicle has hail damage as a result of the early April 2023 hail storms, this article will answer some of the most frequently asked questions we have received from Aurora, IL vehicle owners.

How do I get the hail damage repaired on my vehicle?

There are generally 2 methods to repair dent damage to vehicles.
  • Paintless Dent Repair (PDR). PDR is the preferred method for repairing auto hail damage. Specialized tools designed specifically for PDR technicians to remove dents from either the underside or top surface of the damaged area. Special rods are used on the underside of the vehicle panels to push out and smooth dents. Dent pullers are used to gently pull the dents out from the top surface. Both methods ensure the painted surface is not disturbed. In most cases, repairs may take only a few days. PDR may not be effective on large dents or extensive damage by hail.
  • Conventional vehicle repair. Conventional body repair is the preferred method for repairing dent damage that has damaged the vehicle’s paint or damage that is too large to be reversed with PDR. Working mostly on the exterior of the vehicle, dents are pulled out and irregularities filled in with a body filler While the method is most effective on deep dents, repair time is generally longer because the repaired area must be primed and repainted.

90% of hail damage can be repaired using the paintless dent repair method. If we discover paint damage, such as cracking, scratches, chips or loose paint, The Hail Shop USA can still repair the vehicle. We offer 100% auto hail repair services, including paint damage repair.

Does my car insurance policy cover hail damage?

It depends on the type of coverage you have. You’re covered for auto hail damage if you have comprehensive insurance coverage.

Minor hail damage often isn’t worth claiming because the repair costs don’t exceed the deductible. Keep in mind that hail damage can be hard to perceive with the naked eye. The Hail Shop uses special LED lighting specifically designed to identify hail damage you might not see.

Can hail damage total your car?

Yes, a very severe hail storm CAN total out a vehicle.  Depending on the size of the hailstones and wind speeds during the storm plus the grade of your vehicle’s panels, a hail storm can deem a vehicle beyond repair. Some materials, such as steel, used in car manufacturing are more durable and safe than others.

The hail damage must be severe enough before insurance companies will declare a vehicle as totaled. If you are concerned that your vehicle was totaled by the recent Aurora storms, call the professionals at The Hail Shop USA first for a thorough and comprehensive assessment first.

When an insurance adjuster estimates the hail damage, they will sometimes decide a vehicle is totaled because they don’t understand the magnitude of what PDR can repair.

Do I have to repair hail damage on my car in Aurora, IL?

If your vehicle is completely paid off and you own it outright, the choice to repair is yours. If you still carry a lien on your vehicle, you must repair the hail damage.  Any settlement will be made out to you and your lienholder.

Will I need to deal with an insurance adjuster on hail damage?

The choice is yours! You can take care of the hail claim and deal with the insurance company or you can skip the stressful parts and leave it to us. From inspecting your vehicle and writing up an estimate for your insurance company to filing your hail claim for you, we can take care of everything.

This is how it works:

  • We inspect your vehicle at the location of your choice.
  • We write the estimate and submit it to your insurance company.
  • If the assigned insurance adjuster wants to double-check our estimate, they will come to the shop to go over the claim.
  • If additional damage is discovered after we have disassembled your vehicle for repairs, we contact your adjuster to request a supplement to cover the damage.
  • Once your vehicle has been repaired, we reach out to the insurance company to close the claim.

Will a hail damage claim in Aurora, IL raise my insurance rate?

If you file a claim for auto hail damage in Illinois, the claim information will go into a database that stores previously filed insurance claims. If you have an extensive claims history, that could result in higher premiums.

Frequent hail can also affect the insurance rates for everyone in a particular area. If your area is prone to severe weather, insurance companies might set rates higher due to the likelihood of claims.

The National Weather Service does report instances of hail at its primary sites in Illinois over time. These sites include Chicago, Springfield, Rockford, Peoria, Moline, and St Louis. State Farm paid out over $3.1 billion in hail claims in 2020, according to an April 2020 analysis by the insurer.

Ultimately, Aurora, IL auto hail damage claim, or any city in Illinois, can affect your car insurance rates, whether you file a claim or not.

Millions of Dollars in Auto Hail Claims – Omaha https://www.thehailshopusa.com/omaha-auto-hail-damage-claims/ Fri, 15 Jul 2022 17:33:24 +0000 https://www.thehailshopusa.com/?p=7733 In the Aftermath of a Seriously Severe Hail Storm in Omaha, NE

When high wind speeds and hail meet during a severe summer storm, the result is millions of dollars in repairs. Omaha auto hail repair shops will be busy for many months and possibly even into next year. Residents are worried that these severe storms could be the new norm.

Kearney County Emergency Management Director Craig Lupkes said, “We’ve been hit pretty hard the last couple of years. We can never just catch rain. All it is is severe weather. When it comes through, it destroys everything.”

Omaha meteorologists and scientists are echoing these concerns.

Scientists say that damaging hailstorms are on the increase in Nebraska and are expected to worsen with climate change. Meteorologists describe these storms as a “ring of fire” because they follow along the periphery of the hot air mass. Climatologists have notated that 2022 has been the second worst June for hail in the last 10 years.

Good news. Hail storm season in the midwest typically only lasts about 3 months of the year. Bad news, the consensus by experts in the scientific community doesn’t see this trend in severe weather getting better.

Nebraska can get hail any month of the year, but most hailstorms occur from May through July, with June the peak month. June 14, 2022, has been the worst.

Omaha insurance groups report a major increase in wind/hail damage claims.

Hail Damage Repair Omaha, NE$32 million dollars in 2022 hail damage claims alone.

American Family Insurance, a major insurer in Nebraska, has received 6,200 claims for wind and hail damage this year and over 4,000  more in June.

In an attempt to expedite the Omaha auto hail claims process, some insurance companies have set up drive-through inspection tents in multiple big box store parking lots across multiple counties.

Omaha vehicle owners are expressing major concerns about the likelihood of rate increases as a result of the hail claims.

American Family Insurance spokesman Ken Muth says, “While storm damage does affect insurance rates, no single year does,  Instead, the company bases rates on a 20- to 30-year average. The recent sharp increases in insurance rates are due to the rising cost of building materials, car parts, replacement cars, and labor.”

Why are we seeing hail in the winter months? https://www.thehailshopusa.com/why-are-we-seeing-hail-in-the-winter-months/ Sat, 25 Dec 2021 17:06:21 +0000 https://www.thehailshopusa.com/?p=7684 Typically, we experience sleet in the wintertime months and hail during the warm months of summer – so why is it hailing in December?

While sleet and hail are both forms of frozen precipitation, they form in completely different ways but before we get further into these curious frozen weather phenomenons, let’s discuss all of the forms of precipitation.

There are five primary types that eventually reach the ground: snow, sleet, freezing rain, hail, and rain.

RainRain

When the air is warm enough all the way down to the earths surface, it’s just plain old rain. Further explained, when heat from the Sun turns moisture (water) formed from plants and leaves, as well as oceans, lakes, and rivers, into water vapour (gas), which disappears into the air. The water vapor then rises and turns into clouds.

When the water vapor cools and condenses, it then turns BACK into water. When the water droplets get too large and heavy to suspend, they fall as rain.

Snow

Snow forms when tiny ice crystals in clouds stick together to become snowflakes. If enough crystals stick together, they’ll become heavy enough to fall to the ground.

Snowflakes that descend through moist air that is slightly warmer than 0 °C will melt around the edges and stick together to produce big flakes.

Snowflakes that fall through cold, dry air produce powdery snow that does not stick together.

Snow is formed when temperatures are low and there is moisture in the atmosphere in the form of tiny ice crystals.

Freezing Rain

Freezing rain develops when warm oceanic air rises up and over the cold air, producing liquid precipitation that falls through the cold layer. The falling droplets become supercooled and freeze on impact with the cold surface causing freezing rain. Freezing rain is the precipitation type with the highest rate of accidents and death during the weather event.

Freezing rain occurs only when the earths surface is below freezing temperatures.

Sleet

Sleet is oftentimes confused with freezing rain but the two, in fact, are very different. Sleet is simply frozen raindrops and occurs when the layer of freezing air along the surface is thicker. This causes the raindrops to freeze before reaching the ground. Sleet isn’t as dangerous as Freezing Rain because instead of freezing when it hits the earths surface, sleet bounces off of objects on impact.

Sleet occurs when snowflakes only partially melt when they fall through a shallow layer of warm air. These slushy drops refreeze as they next fall through a deep layer of freezing air above the surface.

Hail

Hail is essentially oversized sleet. Hail is frozen precipitation that can grow to very large sizes through the collection of water that freezes onto the hailstone’s surface.

Hail typically forms in spring, summer or fall thunderstorms. First, soft, snow-like particles form in subfreezing air at the top of a thunderstorm. (Yes, even in the middle of summer, the tops of thunderstorms are below freezing).

The hailstones grow bigger in the clouds as ice crystals and cloud droplets freeze onto them. They’re held suspended in the clouds by strong winds that push up into the storm.

Finally, once the hailstones grow too heavy, gravity causes them to fall to the Earth.

Hailstones come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They can be lumpy, bumpy, and may even take the shape of small spikes. Hailstones must be at least 0.2 inches in size.

Hail typically forms during the warmer months of summer.

Why are we seeing hail in the winter months?

As you have read above, you now know that the months in which hail forms doesn’t depend on seasons but the temperature of the season.

Hail requires cold in the upper atmosphere, where it forms. A raindrop forms and begins to fall, but an updraft takes it into the freezing zone, where it freezes. It begins to fall again, but another updraft takes it back up, where it acquires another layer of ice. After several such cycles, the frozen particles fall as hailstones. It may be cold or not so cold on the ground.

Typically, the winter months display cooler temperatures and the summer months  are warmer. This isn’t always the case, much like we experienced in Kentucky this December of 2021.

The average temperature in Kentucky during the month of December is high 45.4°F and low 29.9°F. December 11, 2021 clocked in at a high of 66°F and low of 54°F.

On December 10, 2021, a violent, long-tracked tornado moved across Western Kentucky, producing severe to catastrophic damage in numerous towns. In Paducah, KY on December 11, 2021 – 2.75″ hail fell from the sky resulting in hail damage to vehicles and homes.

“The hail recorded earlier in the evening Sunday from the supercells ahead of the cold front was very impressive. Especially for the time of year. A few locations even observed hail damage to vehicles and homes. Ping pong ball sized hail was even observed by a NWS employee in the Paducah area.” – WPSD Local.

2021 has proven to be the year of record breaking and unseasonably warmer winter months….and unseasonable weather.

Global Warming Effects on Hail Alley https://www.thehailshopusa.com/global-warming-effects-hail-alley/ Tue, 13 Jul 2021 22:24:57 +0000 https://www.thehailshopusa.com/?p=7666 Starting somewhere around March every year,  a large swath of the country braces for hail. Known as Hail Alley, the region stretching from Wyoming to Texas receives more hailstorms, and more severe ones, compared to other parts of the country.

Features on land and in the atmosphere make perfect hail conditions for this part of the U.S.

In this article, we will explore how climate change could effect three of the hardest hit states that reside in the path of Hail Alley.

How will Climate Change effect Kansas?

Temperature

Kansas’s climate is changing. In the past century, most of the state has warmed by at least half a degree (F). The soil is becoming drier.

Rain / Snow

Climate change is creating an “unprecedented” risk of severe drought in the Southwest and Central Plains. Rising temperatures and decreasing rainfall mean that future drought could be more extreme than any drought seen in at least the past 1,000 years and the effects could reverberate for urban dwellers and farmers across the regions.

Winters

Warming winters and changes in the timing and size of rainfall events have altered crop yields. Over the next several decades, the amount of rainfall during the wettest days of the year is likely to continue to increase, which would increase flooding.

Hail Occurrences

The environmental conditions for large hail development are not changing with climate warming and that all favorable environments are equally likely to produce large hail.

How will Climate Change effect Colorado?

Temperature

The climate of the Intermountain West is changing, with multiple independent measurements indicating an overall warming of about 2°F across the region in the past 30 years.  In 2020, Colorado experienced its seventh warmest year in more than a century of record-keeping. Average temperatures were 2.8 degrees higher than the average in the past century. 2016 through 2020 was the hottest-ever five-year period for the state, according to the NOAA’s National Center for Climate Information.

Rain / Snow

Coloradans are experiencing what is called a  “snow drought.”  This is what Colorado forecasters are talking about when they say snow cover across the West is lower than at any time over the past two decades. Snowpack is less than 80% of normal statewide with less than two months to keep building.

Hail Occurrences

The effects of climate change on hail and the resulting damage are hard to calculate because hailstorms require distinct ingredients, and global warming affects them in different ways.

To form, hailstorms require moisture, an updraft, variable winds and freezing temperatures at lower levels of the storm cloud.

Updrafts lift water droplets into the clouds, where they attract other droplets and freeze together, scientists say. Winds of varying speed and direction keep the droplets suspended in the cloud long enough to grow into hailstones. When they eventually fall, freezing temperatures in the cloud keep them from melting before they hit warmer air closer to the ground.

Climate change will likely increase updrafts, helping hailstones form, but it will inhibit two hail-producing conditions. Warmer temperatures will expand higher into the atmosphere, so falling hailstones have more time to melt before hitting the ground. And differences in wind speed and direction will subside.

Climate change will make the atmosphere moister, but the effect that will have on hailstones isn’t clear..

How will Climate Change effect Texas?

Temperature

Texas is home to 9 of the hottest cities in the U.S., with McAllen in the 2nd slot. Most of the state of Texas has warmed between one-half and one degree (F) in the past century. Texas is home to 9 of the hottest cities in the U.S., with McAllen in the 2nd slot.

Rain

Despite the increase in heavy storms, changing climate is likely to make water less available overall. As warmer temperatures increase evaporation and water use by plants, soils are likely to continue to become drier. Average rainfall is likely to decrease during winter, spring, and summer. Seventy years from now, the longest period without rain each year is likely to be at least three days longer than it is today. Increased evaporation and decreased rainfall are both likely to reduce the average flow of rivers and streams.

Snow

In the case of the Texas cold snap, the phenomenon began in the first week of January 2021, when air in the stratosphere above the Arctic warmed suddenly. This set up a slow-moving atmospheric chain reaction that weakened the polar vortex, the girdle of winds that keeps frigid air corralled at the North Pole, allowing it to spill out into the temperate regions of Asia, Europe, and North America. Once the cold starts rolling south, very little can stop it.

While these events happen about six times per decade, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Cohen maintains that climate change has increased the frequency with which the polar vortex weakens and allow the cold to air to run amok.

Hail Occurrences

Based on research, there is some indication of more intense hailstorms in a warming climate. Since the 1960s, the annual number of reported hail observations has risen, both in frequency and the size of the hailstones. That rising trend, however, does not necessarily mean climate change is resulting in more hailstorms with larger hail, and could simply indicate that as populations grow, there are more people, living in more areas, able to send in hail reports.

A True Story: Driving Out The Storm https://www.thehailshopusa.com/true-story-driving-out-storm/ Mon, 14 May 2018 15:27:13 +0000 https://www.thehailshopusa.com/?p=1959 Hail+ On The Highway

What To Do & Not To Do If Caught In Tornado While Driving

As a professional paintless dent repair & auto hail repair blogger, I have always assumed I would know exactly the steps to take if caught driving in a hail storm, let alone a deadly Tornado. But when it happened, nothing I had read during my research prepared me for a real-life severe weather situation. I hope my story can help others if a similar even happens to you.

I70 West-Bound

I70W KS to CO
1 HW – 605 MILES

Colorado has always been my families destination of choice for vacationing. Usually, our vacation theme involves snow and mountains but that year – we decided it was time to visit the mountains in the springtime.

We packed up the Jeep, the 3 kids, and the family dog and headed westward. If you have ever taken the trip from Kansas City to Colorado, I don’t have to tell you how boring this drive can be. Outside of the Flint Hills, the worlds largest ball of twine, the interestingly creepy Garden of Eden in Lucas, KS, and some other rather odd roadside attractions you can explore HERE – the only thing to look forward to is tumbleweed and endless games of “ISPY.”

In other words, we were not looking forward to another boring 9-hour drive to Denver.

Stormy Skies Ahead

Stormy Skies Ahead
Stormy Skies Ahead

We had been driving for approximately 4 hours, nearly halfway there. It was nearing time to stop for lunch and switch-out driving duty. The kids were becoming restless due to the cramped conditions, hunger, and the storm that was brewing on the horizon.

Just to be safe, we tuned into local radio stations to check for severe weather alerts. As expected, we could only find country music and religious radio. We also checked in on our Wunderground weather APP and didn’t see anything that appeared to be too dangerous.

In a matter of a few minutes, they skies ahead became darker and angrier looking.

For those who have never experienced a midwest early-spring thunderstorm, these are the facts you need to know.

  1. Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, and Wyoming make up Hail Alley. These states are also card-carrying members of Tornado Alley.
  2. Early spring is when most hail storms and tornados happen.
  3. If you live in Tornado / Hail Alley, you should always be prepared for the virulent midwestern weather and NEVER underestimate the power of Mother Nature.
  4. Storms can become serious in minutes.

According to our Google maps APP, we were about 5 miles outside of  Abilene, KS.

Wind, Lightning, and Hail

Within what seemed to be seconds, the wind picked up, the sky opened up and was dumping buckets of rain on the Jeep. Visibility became nothing. We nearly ran right into the back of a vehicle that was slowed down to a snails speed ahead. The only indication we had of the complete slow-down of traffic ahead of us was the blur of red taillights that smeared ahead.

Semi Overturned By High-Wind Speeds
Semi Overturned By High-Wind Speeds

The kids were in a panic and I was frantically looking for severe weather alerts on my cell phone. Still, nothing.

I jumped when my daughter let out a squeal and pointed to what appeared to be a wreak about 4 car lengths ahead. We could barely make out the semi that we later found out had been blown right off the highway due to the high wind speeds.

Then the hail came bulleting out of the angry clouds. It sounded like a continual blasting of bullets hitting the windshield and metal panels. We told the kids to duck down and put their arms over their heads. I threw the blanket that one of them had brought over their crouching bodies.

The hail fell for about 45 seconds. I just knew we had hail damage. There was no way we couldn’t have. Then, just as fast as it started, it stopped and everything seemed to come to a complete standstill. The rain, wind, and hail had all stopped.

The Calm Before The Storm

Everyone has heard about “the calm before the storm.” If you haven’t, I can describe it to you exactly as we saw it. The sky looked an eerie greenish color and very dark, almost like pea soup. I didn’t need a weather alert to tell me we were about to get hit by a tornado.

Instinctually, we began looking around for shelter. Luckily, this wasn’t my first rodeo. I grew up in Hiawatha, KS, a small town notorious for frequent tornados. I knew a ditch was NOT the best option for protection and neither was the highway overpass that looked to be about a half mile ahead.

A few of our gridlocked neighbors had the same idea. My husband got out of the Jeep and had a brief conversation with the Tacoma that sat beside us.

We decided to start driving in the opposite direction of the dark skies just ahead. We told the kids to stay down and to keep their seatbelts fastened.

Full Speed Behind

My husband quickly and efficiently turned the Jeep around and crossed the grassy terrain between the highway to the other side. I kept vigilant watch of the sky behind and we drove. Many of the vehicles that were around us followed suit.  We drove as fast as we could go in the opposite direction.

We found the town of Abilene, KS quickly. We took the exit ramp and headed to the nearest gas station – luckily right off the exit.

We could hear the sirens blaring as we quickly jumped out of the hail-battered Jeep and joined the others already gathered in the walk-in cooler.

Later, we found the above footage of the tornado we had been party to. The video clip was provided by Tony Laubach/Tornadoes Kick Media, LLC.

No Tornado Watch, No Tornado Warning

As mentioned earlier in the story, we were never notified of a Tornado watch nor warning. I write this story in hopes of teaching others what to do if you are traveling and end up in the direct path of a tornado.

Our decision to “out-run” the tornado is NOT advisable. We got lucky. We knew the closest form of shelter was 5 minutes behind us and as a family, decided to take our chances.

What To Do In Tornado While Traveling

If you are on the highway, as we were, and find yourself sharing the road with one of Mother Nature’s most dangerous weather occurrences, remember the following points.

  1. Do NOT see shelter under an overpass. Weather.com says, “It’s understandable that motorists would feel safest under a sturdy structure like an overpass, but winds are actually higher in these openings, and debris is just as likely to harm you there.”
  2. If you can see the tornado in the distance, NOAA recommends changing course and driving toward a sturdy shelter as soon as you are able. They recommend truck stops, convenience stores, restaurants, and even walk-in coolers. Once you are inside, go to the basement, a cellar, or a hallway or room without windows in the center of the house. – also from the Weather.com website.
  3. If you see a tornado developing where you are driving, the best thing to do is to pull over and evacuate your vehicle. Seek shelter in the nearest sturdy building or storm shelter; do not hide under your car. The wind could potentially roll your car over. If there is no available shelter, find the nearest ditch or low-lying area and crouch low to the ground covering your head with your arms. From www.accuweather.com.
  4. Trust your instincts. If you see tell-tale signs of a tornado, find shelter immediately. High-speed winds, lightning, hail, green skies, and wall clouds are all indicators of potential Tornadic activity.

After The Storm

If your vehicle has been damaged by flying debris or hail, don’t worry about it until you know you and your loved ones are safe. After the storm, contact The Hail Shop USA for a free hail damage estimate. We have locations across the United States.

If you do not find a location near you, look for a reputable paintless dent repair shop near you.

How hard does hail have to hit a car to cause damage? https://www.thehailshopusa.com/hard-hail-hit-car-cause-damage/ https://www.thehailshopusa.com/hard-hail-hit-car-cause-damage/#comments Fri, 12 Jan 2018 14:43:20 +0000 https://www.thehailshopusa.com/?p=1801 Scientifically Speaking

The Physics of Hail

Our elementary school science teacher taught us that all objects fall at the same speed. When it comes to hail, the same theory holds true. It isn’t the speed at which hail falls, it is the size of the hail that is hitting your vehicle. A hailstone the size of a pea won’t cause damage but the quarter-sized hailstones, that is an entirely different story.

It’s All In The Angles

Hailstorms that occur with little to no wind depends solely on gravity. Hoods, trunks, and roofs are the most vulnerable to hail damage.  If the wind is so intense that it blows the hail sideways, then it’s going to damage vehicle panels that would otherwise be out of harm’s way. Windshields get broken and doors get bruised and battered.

Material Make a Difference

Another aspect to consider is the panel material the hail is hitting. Different makes and models have different grades and thicknesses of metal. The thicker or more durable the material, the less damage your vehicle will sustain.

Avoid the Hailstorm

The best way to protect your vehicle from hail damage is to shelter your vehicle if a storm is producing any type of hail anywhere in your vicinity. If you don’t have access to shelter, shopping malls and city parking garages are a good place to start looking.

One last thing: make sure your vehicle has comprehensive coverage if you expect to get it repaired if it is damaged due to weather events.

If your vehicle has hail damage, we are here to help. Schedule a free hail damage inspection online or give us a call to get started with the auto hail repair process.

McKinney Paintless Dent Repair Predictions
Texas Hail Storm – 2017

As a McKinney paintless dent repair shop, we like to keep our eyes on the sky. Predicting weather trends can be tricky but based on the number of hailstorms North Texas has seen in the last few years, we feel confident that the hail trend isn’t stopping anytime soon.

For instance, last year was the costliest year for hail storms on record. Hail was to blame for approximately $600 million in personal property losses in Fort Worth and Arlington, Insurance Journal reported.

The Hail Shop USA of McKinney, TX likes to be ahead of the storm and always prepared for hail because when Texas gets hit, it gets hit big.

Afterall, if you live in Texas, “Go big or go home.” This goes for the weather, too.

The Old Farmers Almanac

2018 McKinney Weather Predictions

One of the weather resources we use for predicting future storms is The Old Farmers Almanac.

Winter Predictions: Winter will be colder than average, with above-average precipitation. The coldest months for 2018 will be from late December into early February with above average snow.

Spring Predictions: April and May will be cooler and rainier than normal. In order to produce hail, there must be high levels of moisture content and a large portion of the cloud layer must be at freezing temperatures. With this knowledge, we predict significant hail occurrences in Northern Texas starting early April and ending mid-June.

Summer Predictions: Summer will be cooler and rainier than normal, with the hottest periods in mid-July and mid-August and a hurricane threat in late August.

Fall Predictions: September and October will be warmer and rainier than normal. Watch for a tropical storm threat in early September. We don’t predict any significant hail storms for the fall but with the warmer temperatures and increased moisture levels, never say never.
